Tote Bags for Architecture Firms: Plans, Fairs and Gifts
Share
Architecture firms notice everything about a bag, so the bag has to be as considered as the buildings.
You look at proportions, seams, the weight of the fabric and how the logo sits on it. A bag with a crooked print or a thin, shiny fabric will never leave the office cupboard.
In this guide I go through what architecture firms usually need from a printed bag. Which bag actually holds drawings, how a line drawing of a building prints on cotton, what works at fairs and biennales, and what makes a good gift for a client when a project opens.

The short answer for architecture firms
For most architecture firms, I recommend a large gusseted cotton bag in black or graphite grey for everyday use, and the big 60 × 40 cm natural bag when people need to carry A3 drawings flat.
For client gifts and project openings, the black organic canvas Marina tote with its wooden toggle feels like a small object rather than a giveaway. All of them can be ordered from 25 pieces with a 1-colour print, and delivery in the EU is included.
If your logo is a fine line mark or you want a line drawing of one of your buildings, a 1-colour screen print in white on black or graphite usually looks the cleanest.
Why architecture firms are particular buyers
Architects are trained to see. A logo that sits two centimetres too low, a print colour that is almost but not quite the brand grey, or a bag that wrinkles badly after one day will all be noticed.
That is not a problem, it is a good brief. It means the choice of bag is a design decision, and it deserves the same care as choosing a typeface for a competition board.
In practice, architecture firms ask me about three things more than anything else. Size, because drawings and models have to fit.
Proportion, because the print has to sit well on the bag. Material, because the studio talks about materials all day and the bag should not contradict that.
The good news is that the simplest options often work best. One print colour, a calm bag colour and a generous size are hard to get wrong.
Which bag holds drawings and plan rolls?
This is the most practical question, so let me start with the sizes. Paper formats follow the ISO 216 standard: A4 is 21 × 29.7 cm, A3 is 29.7 × 42 cm and A2 is 42 × 59.4 cm.
A standard tote bag of 38 × 42 cm takes A4 folders easily. A3 sheets only fit if you hold them upright and the bag is tall enough, and anything bigger needs to be rolled.
For A3 drawings that stay flat
The Large Cotton Bag with Bottom Gusset 60 × 40 + 16 cm is the one I suggest when drawings must not be folded. At 60 cm wide and 40 cm high, an A3 sheet lies in it sideways with room to spare, and the 16 cm bottom gusset lets it stand on a desk.
It is made of 220 g/m² natural cotton, so it is sturdy enough for a set of drawings, a laptop sleeve and a sketchbook at the same time. Larger sheets, such as A2, travel best rolled and standing up in the bag.
Natural cotton, wide enough for A3 drawings lying flat.
For A4 files, sketchbooks and everyday use
The large gusseted cotton bags measure 35 × 39 × 13.5 cm and hold about 18 litres. A4 folders, a sketchbook, a small model in a box and a water bottle fit without the bag losing its shape.
The side and bottom gussets are what make this bag look good in daily use. It stands up, it does not fold flat around its contents, and the 58 cm handles go comfortably over the shoulder.
A deep bag that keeps its shape with A4 files inside.
For plan rolls and models
Rolled drawings stand up best in a bag with a firm bottom. The 60 × 40 cm bag with its 16 cm gusset is the most practical choice here, because the rolls can lean against the side while the base keeps them upright.
For models, I would always use a box inside the bag. Cotton protects against dust and scratches, but it does not protect against pressure.
Printing a line drawing of a building on a bag
Many architecture firms want more than a logo. A line drawing of one of their buildings, a facade, a section or a site plan makes the bag personal and gives people something to talk about.
Line drawings suit screen printing very well, because they are usually one colour and have clear edges. A white line on a black or graphite bag, or a black line on a natural bag, looks crisp and calm.
What prints well
Lines need some weight to print cleanly on cotton. The fabric has a weave, so very thin lines can break up or fill in, especially where many lines run close together.
Before anything is printed, we look at your file and tell you if some lines are too thin or too close together. You then receive a digital proof with the print on the bag, and production starts only after you approve it.
A vector file is best, for example PDF, SVG, AI or EPS. If you only have a PNG of a drawing, send it anyway and we will tell you whether it can be printed as it is.
One colour or full colour?
For line drawings, one colour is almost always the right choice. It is the classic screen print look, and on these bags it is also the cheapest option at 25 pieces.
If you want a rendering, a photo of a model or a coloured site plan, full colour printing is possible as a digital transfer print. Our guide on printing full-colour designs on cotton bags explains how it looks and where its limits are.
If you want different buildings on different bags in the same order, that is possible too. I explain how it works with screen print and with full colour in different designs in one tote bag order.
Black, graphite or natural?
Most architecture firms choose between three bag colours, and each says something slightly different.
Black is the safe and elegant choice. It hides marks from pencils, markers and site visits, and a white print stands out sharply on it. We have many more options in our black tote bags with custom print.
Graphite grey is softer than black and looks very good with white or light grey lines. It is my favourite for studios that like concrete, steel and calm interiors.
Natural cotton shows the material honestly. It looks warm with a black line drawing, but it shows dirt sooner than black or graphite.
A soft dark grey that looks very good with white line prints.
A light print on a light bag can also look very refined, for example light grey on natural. If you like that idea, read our post on tone-on-tone tote bags before you choose.
Bags for architecture fairs and biennales
At an architecture fair or a biennale, visitors carry catalogues, plans and brochures all day. A bag that holds A4 material and still looks good on the shoulder in the evening is the one people keep.
For a stand, I would choose the large gusseted bag in black or graphite. It is sturdy, it is light enough to hand out in numbers, and the price drops well when you order 100 or more.
How many to order depends on the size of your stand and how many conversations you expect. Our post on how many tote bags you need for a trade fair stand gives a simple way to calculate it.
If the fair is in another EU country, we can usually deliver straight to the venue or to your hotel. Plan the delivery date with the fair's logistics rules in mind, as many venues only accept goods in fixed time slots.
Gifts for clients at a project opening
When a building opens, many architecture firms give a small gift to the client, the builder and the people who worked on the project. A bag with a line drawing of that building is a gift that is both personal and useful.
For this, I like the black organic canvas Marina tote. It is made of 340 g/m² organic cotton canvas, measures 34 × 34 × 17 cm and closes with a wooden toggle, so it feels like a small object rather than a promotional bag.
Heavy organic canvas with a wooden toggle, made for gifts.
With 25 pieces as the minimum, an order for one project opening is easy. You could print the building on the front and keep your studio logo small, so the gift is about the project and not about you.
More bag colours of the same tote are in the Marina tote collection. Real estate developers often order bags for the same occasion, and our post on tote bags for real estate agencies and developers shows what they choose.
Bags for your own studio team
A good bag for the team is a small thing that makes a studio feel like a studio. New colleagues, students on placement and the whole team before a site visit or an office trip can all use one.
For team bags, I would use the large gusseted bag, because it is the one people really use every day. If your office is in one country and your team in several, our page for head offices with delivery across the EU explains how ordering for more than one address works.
Other professional firms have similar needs, and the answers overlap. You can compare with the posts for law firms, consulting firms and fintech teams.
The sustainable materials question
Architecture firms talk about materials, embodied carbon and certifications with their clients every week. It is fair to ask the same questions about a bag.
The most honest answer is that the best bag is the one people use for years. A heavier bag that lasts does more good than a thin one that is thrown away after a fair.
If you want certified organic cotton, the Marina tote is made of organic cotton canvas certified to GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard. The large gusseted bags and the 60 × 40 cm bag are conventional cotton.
Fabric weight also matters for how long a bag lasts. Our guide on cotton bag weights explains the difference between 140, 220 and 340 g/m² in daily use.
What do the bags cost for an architecture firm?
All prices below are per bag with a 1-colour print, excluding VAT, with delivery in the EU included.
| Bag | 25 pcs | 50 pcs | 100 pcs | 500 pcs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Large gusseted bag, black or graphite, 140 g/m² | €7.93 | €5.87 | €4.89 | €3.58 |
| Large bag 60 × 40 + 16 cm, natural, 220 g/m² | €9.68 | €6.13 | €4.84 | €3.97 |
| Marina organic canvas tote, black, 340 g/m² | €12.70 | €11.17 | €9.58 | €8.25 |
So 25 black gusseted bags cost €198.25 in total, and 100 cost €489.00. For a fair, the price per bag at 100 pieces is almost 40% lower than at 25 pieces.
The large 60 × 40 cm bag costs €10.58 per bag at 25 pieces with a full colour print, compared with €9.68 for one colour. Prices can change, so please check the product page for the exact price for your quantity and print.
If you want to understand what moves the price up or down, our guide on what custom printed tote bags cost explains the five main factors.
How to order bags for your architecture firm
- Choose the bag and the quantity on the product page, from 25 pieces.
- Upload your logo or line drawing, ideally as a vector file.
- We check the file and send you a digital proof with the print on the bag.
- After you approve the proof, the bags are printed and delivered.
Production takes about 10 to 15 working days from the moment you approve the artwork. For a fair or an opening, I recommend placing the order at least four weeks before the date, so there is time for questions about the file.
For gifts before Christmas, artwork approved by mid-November is a comfortable plan. You can also enter your latest delivery date in the box in the cart, and we will tell you if it is tight.
FAQ about tote bags for architecture firms
Which tote bag fits A3 drawings without folding?
The Large Cotton Bag with Bottom Gusset 60 × 40 + 16 cm. An A3 sheet lies in it sideways, and larger sheets can be rolled and stand upright.
Can you print a line drawing of our building on a bag?
Yes. Line drawings print very well as a 1-colour screen print, and we check whether thin lines will print cleanly before production.
What is the minimum order for architecture firms?
The minimum is 25 bags per order for the bags in this post. You can order more of the same bag at any time.
Which file should we send?
A vector file such as PDF, SVG, AI or EPS is best. If you only have a PNG, send it and we will tell you whether it works.
Which bag colour do architects choose most?
Black and graphite grey with a white print are the most popular choices for architecture firms. Natural with a black line drawing is a warmer alternative.
Can you deliver bags to an architecture fair abroad?
Within the EU, we can usually deliver to the venue or to your hotel. Tell us the date and the venue's delivery rules when you order.
Are the bags sustainable?
The Marina tote is GOTS certified organic cotton canvas. The other bags are conventional cotton, and all of them are made to be used for years.
How long does it take?
About 10 to 15 working days after you approve the artwork. Plan at least four weeks before a fair or an opening.
