What carries plants — and why shape beats weight

Plants are the most awkward thing a shop bag is ever asked to carry. A potted plant is heavy, top-heavy and has a flat base that a standard tote cannot support. Cut flowers bring the opposite problem: tall, delicate and often still wet. In this sector the shape of the bag matters more than the fabric weight.

A flat gusseted base is the whole difference

A gusseted bag opens out at the bottom so a pot stands upright instead of leaning into the customer's leg on the walk to the car. This single feature prevents the most common failure — spilled soil and a damaged plant — and it matters more than adding another 100 g/m² of cotton.

220 g/m² with a reinforced bottom for pots

Combine the gusset with a reinforced bottom and the bag takes the weight of a decent-sized plant without the seams complaining. This is the workhorse specification for a plant shop till, and the one to default to unless you know the loads are lighter.

Two handles spread real weight

The double handle cotton tote at 340 g/m² distributes load across two hanks, so the bag can be carried by hand or over the shoulder depending on what is in it. Useful when a customer leaves with more than they planned, which in a plant shop is most of the time.

Garden centres need a step up again

For compost, tools, bulbs and bulk buys, the 475 g/m² oversized canvas and the 407 g/m² chevron handle shopper are built for loads a normal tote will not survive. Jute is also worth considering here — the natural material suits the sector's look and handles rough use well.

Carry-out bag or a product you sell

A lighter printed bag replaces disposable carriers at the till. A heavier canvas or jute bag priced on the shelf becomes a product in its own right and comes back on the next visit. The two need different weights, and knowing which you are buying prevents overspending on giveaways.
