Church Tote Bags: Welcome, Choir and Fundraising Bags

Church tote bags are printed cotton or jute bags that a parish uses to welcome newcomers, equip its choir and volunteers, and raise money at markets and events.

Custom tote bags for churches cost less than most people expect: a natural cotton bag with a one-colour print starts at €5.15 per bag at 25 pieces, and the price per bag drops as the quantity grows.

In this guide, I go through what church tote bags are used for, from church welcome bags to choir bags, which bag fits which job, the colours and designs that work, what it all costs and when to order before Advent.

In this article

What are church tote bags used for?

A church is one of the few places where the same bag can be a welcome, a uniform and a fundraiser.

Most church bags fall into a handful of uses:

  • Welcome bags for newcomers, visitors and new members of the congregation
  • Choir bags for sheet music, folders and a water bottle
  • Fundraising bags sold at the Christmas market, the summer fair or the church shop
  • Volunteer and event bags for parish festivals, conferences and pilgrimages
  • Gift bags for baptisms, confirmations, anniversaries and Christmas

What these have in common is that the bag leaves the building. It goes to the supermarket, the library and the school gate, and it carries the name of your church with it.

That is quiet outreach, and it happens every day of the week.

Why do church tote bags work better than flyers and mugs?

Because a bag is used, and a flyer is read once.

A mug stays in a kitchen cupboard, and a pen disappears into a drawer. Good church tote bags are carried in public for years.

There is a practical reason too. Churches hand out a lot of paper - service sheets, hymn books, newsletters and rotas - and a bag keeps it all together.

And it fits a community that prefers things that last over things that are thrown away.

Useful, visible and long-lived is a rare combination for something that costs a few euros.

How do church welcome bags for visitors work?

A welcome bag turns "nice to see you" into something a newcomer can take home.

Keep the contents simple and personal:

  • a short welcome letter from the priest, the pastor or the parish council
  • the service times and a calendar for the coming months
  • a contact card with a name, not only an office number
  • something small and local, such as a candle, a bar of chocolate or a jar of honey
  • information for families: children's groups, the choir and youth evenings

For church welcome bags, a light natural cotton bag is usually the right choice. The classic 140 g/m² tote is 38 × 42 cm, holds 10 litres and has 67 cm handles, so it goes over the shoulder.

The natural, undyed colour suits almost any logo, and it is the least expensive bag in this guide.

One good bag, handed over by a person, does more than a table full of leaflets.

Which church tote bags suit choirs and music groups?

A choir needs a bag that takes A4 sheet music flat, and the 38 × 42 cm tote does exactly that.

A choir recently ordered 250 royal blue cotton tote bags from us, with their logo printed in white. They first thought of black, and then the team chose royal blue.

The bags were delivered straight to a church in Berlin, ready to be unpacked the day before the event. Nobody from the choir could check them in person before that day, so they asked to see how the finished bag would look.

That is what the digital proof is for. It shows the bag colour, the size of the logo and its placement, and nothing is printed until you approve it.

For choir bags, colour does a lot of work: a row of matching bags looks like a group before anyone has sung a note. A white print on a strong colour is also easy to read from a distance.

If your choir travels, our guide to ordering printed bags across borders explains how delivery to a venue works.

Matching bags are the simplest choir uniform there is.

Can church tote bags raise money for your parish?

Yes, and the numbers are easy to check.

At 100 pieces, the natural classic tote costs €3.55 per bag with a one-colour print, excluding VAT. That is €355.00 for the whole order.

Sell the bags for €10 each at the Christmas market, and 100 bags bring in €1,000. Even after VAT is added to your cost, each bag leaves more than €5 for the organ fund, the youth trip or the food bank.

Three things make a church fundraiser bag sell:

  • A design people want to carry. A line drawing of the church tower or the rose window sells better than a logo alone.
  • A reason. Say on the stall what the money is for.
  • A limited edition. "Christmas market 2026" on the bag gives people a reason to buy this year's bag.

Unsold church tote bags are not lost either, because they can become next year's welcome bags.

Our guide to what custom printed tote bags cost explains how quantity and print colours change the price.

A bag that pays for itself and then keeps speaking for your church is a good fundraiser.

Which church bags work for Advent and Christmas markets?

For markets, I would add one sturdier bag to the range.

The Cotton Pocket Jute Shopper is 42 × 33 cm with a 19 cm gusset - the extra panel of fabric that gives the bag its depth - and it holds 21 litres. The laminated jute body stands upright on its own, and your design is printed on the cotton canvas pocket on the front, up to 36 × 22 cm.

It is a real shopping bag, so it suits a parish market where people buy jam, wreaths and second-hand books. Our guide to custom jute bags covers the material in detail, and all the shapes are in the jute bag collection.

Wine is the other Christmas classic. A jute wine bag with a window on the front turns a bottle into a gift for volunteers, the organist or the raffle.

The single-bottle jute wine bag has a minimum order of 50 pieces, and the wine bag buying guide covers the other options. You find the colours in the jute wine bag collection.

One market, two bags: a shopper to sell and a wine bag to give.

Which church bags suit confirmations, youth groups and camps?

Young people carry a bag if it looks like something they would have chosen themselves.

For a confirmation class, a tote in a strong colour with a small, modern print works better than a large crest. For summer camps and pilgrim walks, a drawstring bag is practical because it sits on the back.

Our drawstring backpack ideas for schools and events show how groups use them.

A confirmation or baptism gift is also a lovely use for a small order of 25 bags. The year and the name of the church are enough, and the bag becomes a keepsake.

If the youth group helps to design the bag, they will carry it.

Which church tote bags fit which use?

Here is the short version.

Use Bag
Welcome bags for newcomers Natural White classic cotton tote, 140 g/m²
Choirs, volunteers and youth groups Bright Royal Blue classic cotton tote, 140 g/m²
Christmas market and church shop Cotton Pocket Jute Shopper, 340 g/m²
Gifts for volunteers and raffles Natural jute wine bag, 330 g/m² (minimum 50)

The prices for all four are in the cost section below.

If you want one bag for everything, choose the classic cotton tote. It is light, it comes in 48 stock colours and it has the lowest price, and you see every colour in the classic cotton tote collection.

Start with one bag that does most jobs, and add a second one when you need it.

Which colours and print look best on church tote bags?

Start with the colours your church already uses.

In many Western churches, the year has its own colours: purple for Advent and Lent, white and gold for Christmas and Easter, red for Pentecost and green for the long weeks in between. The classic tote comes in plum purple, bright red, bottle green and natural white, among others.

That opens up a nice idea: an Advent bag in purple, or a green bag for every day.

For the print, contrast matters most. On a natural or white bag, a dark print such as black, navy or burgundy reads clearly, and on a dark bag, white is the safest choice.

One print colour is usually enough, and it keeps the price down. Our guide to choosing print colours shows more combinations.

Each bag colour is a separate product, so if you want to mix bag colours in one order, please ask us first.

Calm colours and strong contrast make church tote bags that people of every age will carry.

What should you print on church tote bags?

Less than you think.

The designs that work best on custom tote bags for churches are simple:

  • the name of the church with a small symbol or logo
  • a line drawing of the building, the tower or a window
  • a short verse or a line from a hymn
  • the name of the choir, the group or the event, with the year

Screen printing suits these one-colour and two-colour designs, and it is the most economical method for larger orders. Full-colour digital transfer printing (DTF) suits a children's drawing, a painted altarpiece or a design with many colours.

DTF also lets you split one order into several designs, with at least 5 bags per design and 25 bags in total. With screen printing, each design needs its own screens, so the minimum is 25 bags per design.

That means the choir, the youth group and the welcome team can each have their own design in one order. The difference between the two methods is explained in digital printing vs screen printing.

A vector file gives the sharpest print, and our file type guide explains what to send.

A design that a parishioner drew by hand often becomes the church tote bag everyone wants.

Are church tote bags a responsible choice?

They are, as long as they are used.

A cotton or jute bag only earns its place when it replaces many disposable bags. So the most responsible church tote bag is the one people like enough to carry for years.

Many congregations now look closely at what they buy. The European Christian Environmental Network brings together churches across Europe that work on caring for creation, and choosing things that are reused instead of thrown away fits that work.

Three small choices help: order the number you will really use, choose a design without a date if the bags should last several years, and pick a bag that is strong enough for its job.

A bag that is still in use in five years is the best message you can print.

What do church tote bags cost?

The price depends on the bag, the quantity and the number of print colours.

Here are today's prices per bag with a one-colour print on one side, excluding VAT:

Bag 25 pcs 50 pcs 100 pcs
Natural White classic tote €5.15 €5.15 €3.55
Bright Royal Blue classic tote €5.47 €5.47 €3.87
Cotton Pocket Jute Shopper €9.36 €7.32 €6.12
Natural jute wine bag from 50 pcs €7.16 €5.56

At 250 pieces, the natural classic tote drops to €2.60 per bag, which is why larger parishes often order once for the whole year.

A full-colour print costs a little more: the natural classic tote is €6.05 per bag at 25 pieces.

So 25 natural church welcome bags with a one-colour print come to €128.75 before VAT.

The exact price for every quantity is shown on each product page, so a treasurer can check the budget before anyone asks for a quote.

Knowing the number of bags early keeps the parish budget calm.

When should you order church tote bags for Advent and Christmas?

In October, if you want them for Advent.

Production and delivery typically take 10 to 15 working days after you approve the digital proof. In 2026, the first Sunday of Advent is 29 November, and autumn is the busiest printing time of the year.

I would order four to six weeks before the day you need the bags. That also leaves time for the parish council to agree on the design, which often takes longer than expected.

We deliver within the EU, and the bags can go to the parish office, the church or the venue. Tell us the address and the date, and we will confirm the timing before you order.

An early order means your church tote bags are waiting for the market, and not the other way round.
