Water-Based Screen Print Ink on Tote Bags: Pros and Cons

Some prints you see, and some prints you feel.

Run your fingers over a printed tote bag, and you will usually notice a smooth layer on top of the cotton.

That is the classic screen print ink, and for most logos it is exactly right.

But sometimes a customer writes to me and asks for something different: a print that feels like part of the fabric, soft and almost invisible to the touch.

That is what water-based screen print ink does, and in this guide I explain how it looks, what it is good at, where it struggles and how to order it from us.

Short answer: water-based ink soaks into the cotton instead of sitting on top, so the print is very soft, breathes with the fabric and has a slightly matte, natural look.

It is not part of our standard online order, it needs to be requested separately, it starts from 250 bags per design and the price is a bit higher than our standard screen print.

What is water-based screen print ink?

Water-based ink is a screen printing ink where the colour is carried in water instead of in a plastic paste.

The print is made in the same way as any screen print: the ink is pushed through a fine mesh screen onto the bag, one screen for each colour.

After printing, the bag goes through a dryer so the water evaporates and the colour binds to the cotton fibres.

The big difference is where the ink ends up.

A standard print forms a thin layer on top of the fabric, while a water-based print goes into the fabric.

You can see the weave of the cotton through the print, and you can hardly feel it with your hand.

That one difference explains almost everything else in this guide.

Water-based vs plastisol: what is the difference?

Our standard screen print uses plastisol ink, which is the most common ink for printed bags in Europe.

Plastisol is a PVC-based ink, which means it is a kind of soft plastic paste that stays on the surface of the cotton after curing.

That is why it gives such strong, opaque colours and works so well on dark bags.

Water-based ink takes the opposite approach and becomes part of the fabric.

Here is how the two compare on the things buyers ask me about most.

Water-based ink Plastisol ink (our standard)
Where the ink sits Soaks into the cotton fibres Thin layer on top of the cotton
Feel Very soft, almost like the bag itself Smooth, slightly rubbery surface
Look Matte, natural, slightly washed Bright, solid, a little shiny
Fine lines and details Very good on light cotton Very good
Light bags (natural, white) Excellent Excellent
Dark bags Possible, colours look softer Very strong, bright colours
Minimum order From 250 bags per design From 25 bags
How to order Request separately, quote per order Directly in our shop
Price A bit higher Standard prices on each product page

Neither ink is better in every situation.

They simply give two different results, and the right one depends on your design, your bag and what you want people to feel when they pick it up.

What does a water-based print look and feel like on a tote bag?

The first thing people notice is the touch.

When you run your hand over a water-based print on a natural cotton bag, it feels almost the same as the unprinted fabric next to it.

There is no edge where the print starts and no smooth patch in the middle of the bag.

The second thing is the look.

Because the ink sits in the fibres, the texture of the cotton shows through, and the colours look a little matte and soft, a bit like a vintage print.

On a natural or white canvas bag, this gives a very calm, handmade feel that suits illustrations, line drawings and simple typography.

The third thing is how the print moves.

A water-based print bends with the fabric, so when you fold or crumple the bag, the print does not crease or crack on the surface.

Over time and many washes, the print softens a little more, the way a favourite T-shirt does.

For some brands, that worn-in look is exactly the point.

The pros of water-based ink

These are the reasons customers ask for water-based printing.

  • A very soft print: the bag feels like cotton, not like cotton with a plastic patch on it.
  • A natural, matte look: perfect for artisan, design and lifestyle brands that want a calm, handmade style.
  • The fabric breathes: there is no closed layer on top, so the cotton stays as it is.
  • Fine lines stay delicate: thin hand-drawn lines and small details keep their light character on light cotton.
  • No PVC in the ink: the ink is water-based, which fits a brand story about natural materials.
  • Large print areas stay soft: a big design does not turn the bag stiff, which can happen with a large solid plastisol print.

In short, water-based ink is the choice when the feel of the bag matters as much as the logo.

The cons of water-based ink

Water-based printing is lovely, but it is not the right answer for every order.

  • A higher minimum: our print partner prints water-based from 250 bags per design, so it does not work for 25 or 100 bags.
  • Not every design works: some designs, colours or bag colours are not suitable, so we always check the design first.
  • Softer colours on dark bags: bright, opaque colours on black or navy are easier with our standard plastisol ink.
  • Less exact colour matching: because the ink soaks into the fabric, the colour of the bag affects the final shade a little more.
  • A separate quote and a bit higher price: it is not in our online configurator, so it takes one extra step and costs a bit more.
  • Slightly softer over time: after many washes, a water-based print can fade a little more than a plastisol print.

None of these points are problems if you know them before you order.

When should you choose water-based screen print ink?

Water-based ink shines in a few clear situations.

Artisan and design collections. If the bag is a product you sell, like a souvenir collection, a museum shop bag or an illustrator's own range, the soft print makes it feel more like a designed object and less like a giveaway.

Hand-drawn illustrations and line art. I remember a designer who was planning a small souvenir collection with three original hand-drawn illustrations.

She asked me which ink we use, because she wanted a print that did not feel thick, plastic or rubbery, and the fine lines were an important part of her designs.

That is the typical water-based customer, and it is exactly the kind of question I love to answer.

Brands with a natural materials story. Organic cotton, natural canvas and a print without PVC in the ink tell one consistent story.

Large designs. If your design covers a big part of the bag, water-based ink keeps the whole bag soft and easy to fold.

Retail and lifestyle brands. When customers pick the bag up in a shop, the soft feel signals quality before they even read the logo.

If two or more of these describe your order, water-based ink is worth asking about.

When is a standard print or DTF the better choice?

For many orders, our standard prints are simply the better fit.

Small quantities. If you need 25, 50 or 100 bags, water-based printing is not possible at those quantities, and a standard screen print or a full colour DTF print is the way to go.

Bright colours on dark bags. A white or neon logo on a black bag looks strongest in plastisol, because the ink sits on top and covers the dark fabric well.

Exact brand colours. If your logo must match a precise Pantone shade, plastisol gives the most predictable result.

Photos and many colours. For photographic designs or artwork with many colours, a full colour DTF print is usually the better option.

Short deadlines. A water-based order starts with a design check and a separate quote, so it needs a little more time than ordering directly in our shop.

You can read more about the different methods in our guide to digital printing vs screen printing on tote bags.

There is no wrong choice, only a better fit for your design.

Which tote bags work best with water-based ink?

Water-based ink loves natural cotton.

The best results come on light bags: natural, off-white and white cotton or canvas.

On these colours the ink keeps its true shade, and the soft, matte look is at its most beautiful.

Heavier fabrics such as 340 g/m² canvas and 407 g/m² cotton have a clear weave that shows through the print and gives a lovely textured look.

Lighter 140 g/m² cotton works too, and the print stays soft on a thin bag.

On dark bags, our print partner can print water-based with up to 4 colours, and up to 5 colours on light bags.

Dark colours need a little extra care, so we look at your design and bag colour together and tell you honestly what result to expect.

If you are unsure, a natural heavy cotton bag is the safest choice for a water-based print.

How should you prepare a design for water-based printing?

A good water-based print starts with the right artwork.

Send your design as a vector file, such as AI, EPS, SVG or a vector PDF, so each colour can be separated into its own screen.

Our guide to file types for printing cotton tote bags explains the formats in more detail.

Keep the number of colours in mind, because each colour needs its own screen, and water-based printing allows up to 5 colours on light bags and up to 4 on dark bags.

Fine lines are welcome, but very thin hairlines and tiny text can soften as the ink soaks into the cotton.

If your design has very small details, we will look at it and tell you if anything should be made a little bolder.

Think about the bag colour together with the print colour.

A dark print on a natural bag gives the clearest result, while a light print on a dark bag will look softer than with our standard ink.

If you like the idea of a quiet, elegant print, our post on tone-on-tone tote bags shows how calm a light print on a light bag can look.

The simpler and clearer your artwork, the more beautiful a water-based print becomes.

How do you request water-based printing?

Water-based printing is not an option in our online configurator, so you request it separately by email.

Here is how it works.

  1. Write to us with your design, the bag you like, the bag colour and the quantity, at least 250 bags per design.
  2. We check your design with our print partner, because not every design is suitable for water-based ink.
  3. You receive a separate quote with the price per bag and the production time.
  4. You approve a digital proof that shows the print size and position on the bag.
  5. We print and deliver your bags to the address you choose in the EU.

If water-based printing does not suit your design, we will tell you why and suggest the best alternative, usually our standard screen print or a DTF print.

Writing to us costs nothing, and you will get an honest answer.

How much does water-based screen printing cost?

Water-based printing costs a bit more than our standard screen print.

The ink is more demanding to work with, it is printed by a specialised partner, and every order is checked and quoted individually.

Because of that, there is no fixed price list for it on our product pages, and we send you a separate quote for each order.

To give you a starting point, here are our standard 1-colour screen print prices at 300 pieces, excluding VAT.

Bag Standard print at 300 pcs Water-based print
Natural tote with black handles, 140 g/m² €1.98 Quote on request
Natural heavyweight tote with gussets, 340 g/m² €3.39 Quote on request
Natural organic canvas Marina tote, 340 g/m² €6.60 Quote on request
Natural Fairtrade Camden shopper, 407 g/m² €6.95 Quote on request

A water-based print on the same bag will be a bit higher than the standard price in the table.

Our article on what sets the price of custom tote bags explains the other factors that change the price, such as the bag, the number of colours and the quantity.

For a bag you sell or a collection you are proud of, the small difference often pays for itself in how the bag feels.

Is water-based ink more sustainable?

Water-based ink is often chosen for its natural story, and there are good reasons for that.

The ink uses water instead of a PVC paste, so the print does not add a plastic layer to the cotton bag.

Plasticisers in textile prints are something public buyers also pay attention to.

In Sweden, for example, the national public procurement agency sets limits on plasticisers in coatings and prints on textiles in its purchasing criteria.

That said, every ink has to be used correctly, and our standard plastisol prints are also made to last for many years of use.

A bag that is used for years is always more sustainable than one that ends up in a drawer.

So the most sustainable choice is the bag and print that your customers will love and keep using.

Water-based ink simply makes that choice easier for brands that want a soft, natural bag.

Frequently asked questions about water-based screen print ink

What is water-based screen print ink?

It is a screen printing ink where the colour is carried in water instead of a plastic paste.

The ink soaks into the cotton fibres, so the print is very soft and almost invisible to the touch.

Is water-based ink better than plastisol?

Not better, just different.

Water-based ink gives a softer, more natural print, while plastisol gives brighter, more opaque colours, especially on dark bags.

What is the minimum order for water-based printing?

Our print partner prints water-based from 250 bags per design.

For smaller quantities, we recommend our standard screen print or a full colour DTF print.

Can I order water-based printing in the online shop?

No, water-based printing needs to be requested separately.

Send us your design, bag, colour and quantity, and we will send you a separate quote.

Does water-based printing cost more?

Yes, the price is a bit higher than our standard screen print.

Every order is quoted individually after we have checked your design.

Can you print water-based ink on black or dark bags?

Yes, our print partner can print up to 4 colours on dark bags.

The colours look softer than with plastisol, so we check your design and bag colour first.

How long does a water-based print last?

A well-cured water-based print is made to last through normal use and washing.

Over many washes it can soften and fade a little more than a plastisol print, which many brands see as part of its charm.

Which designs work best with water-based ink?

Illustrations, line art, simple typography and large designs on natural or white cotton bags work beautifully.

Very thin hairlines, tiny text and bright colours on dark bags are better with our standard print.

Conclusion: a print you can feel the difference in

Water-based screen print ink is for orders where the feel of the bag matters.

It gives a soft, matte, natural print that becomes part of the cotton, and it is lovely on natural canvas, illustrations and artisan collections.

It starts from 250 bags per design, it is requested separately, and the price is a bit higher than our standard screen print.

If you are not sure whether your design suits it, send it to me and I will tell you honestly.

Sometimes the softest print says the most about your brand.
