Grey Tote Bags with Print: Light Grey or Graphite?
Share
Grey is the colour people pick when black feels too heavy and natural feels too ordinary.
It is calm, it goes with almost every logo, and it does not shout.
But "grey" on a tote bag is not one colour. A light grey bag and a graphite bag look like two different products, and the print that looks great on one can disappear on the other.
In this guide I walk you through the grey bags we print on, which print colours work on each, how they look in real life, and what they cost from 25 pieces.

Short answer: light grey or graphite?
Pick light grey if your logo is dark or colourful, and pick graphite if your logo works in white.
Light grey is soft and friendly, and almost any dark print colour reads clearly on it. Graphite is deep and serious, close to black but warmer, and it needs a light print colour to stand out.
Pure grey sits in the middle, and charcoal is the darkest grey we have.
If you are not sure, send us your logo and we will tell you which grey makes it look best.
Which grey tote bags can you print on?
We have four main grey shades in our grey tote bag collection.
- Light grey: a pale, cool grey, like a cloudy sky. On our classic cotton tote the maker gives it the colour code Pantone Cool Grey 6C.
- Pure grey: a clear mid grey, neither warm nor cool, a little darker than light grey.
- Graphite grey: a dark grey that is close to black in low light. On the classic tote the maker's code is Pantone 425.
- Charcoal grey: the darkest of the four, in organic Fairtrade twill, with a soft woven texture.
The names come from the bag makers, so a "light grey" from one maker is not exactly the same as a "light grey" from another.
That is why I always recommend choosing from one product page and not mixing grey bags from different makers in the same campaign.
If you want to see the codes yourself, the Pantone page for Cool Gray 6 C shows the light grey shade on screen.
Screens show colours a little differently, so treat it as a guide and not as a promise.
| Shade | Feels like | Best print colours | Bags we print on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light grey | Soft, friendly, fresh | Black, navy, dark green, red, orange | Classic 140 g/m², logo print 140 g/m², organic 200 g/m², gymsac |
| Pure grey | Neutral, calm | Black, white, navy, yellow | Classic 140 g/m² |
| Graphite grey | Serious, modern, close to black | White, light grey, yellow, light blue | Classic 140 g/m², premium 200 g/m², heavyweight 340 g/m², gusseted bags, gymsac |
| Charcoal grey | Deep, soft, premium | White, cream, pale gold | Fairtrade organic twill 210 g/m² |
Every shade comes from real product pages, and each bag has its own photo there.
When is a light grey tote bag the right choice?
Light grey is the best grey for logos with more than one colour.
A light grey background lets red, orange, navy and dark green look clear without the hard contrast of a white bag. It also feels a little more grown-up than a natural cotton bag, which is why it suits shops, offices and conferences.
Light grey is also a good choice when your logo has thin lines or small text in a dark colour.
Dark ink on a pale bag keeps fine details sharp, while thin white lines on a dark bag can look thinner than they are.
There is one thing to know about light grey.
It shows dirt a little more than graphite does, though much less than white or natural white. For a bag people carry every day to the shop, that is a fair trade for how fresh it looks.
If your brand colours are soft pastels, light grey can make them look washed out, so in that case I would pick graphite or a white bag instead.

When does a graphite or charcoal tote bag work better?
Graphite works best when your logo looks good in white.
A white print on graphite looks clean and expensive, a bit like a black bag but softer. Many tech companies, architects, and design studios choose it because it feels modern without being as strict as black.
Graphite also hides marks well, so it is a good pick for bags that will be used hard, at fairs, in warehouses, or on the way to the gym.
If you are choosing between black and graphite, think about where the bag will be seen.
On a dark winter street, black and graphite look almost the same. In daylight and in photos, graphite shows a little more texture and looks less flat.
Charcoal is for brands that want the dark look in a more premium fabric.
The organic Fairtrade twill has a fine diagonal weave, so the colour looks deeper and softer than on a plain cotton bag.
If you love the black look, our guide on why businesses choose black totes explains when black is still the better choice.

Which print colours work best on grey tote bags?
The rule is simple: dark prints on light grey, light prints on graphite and charcoal.
Grey is a neutral colour, so it does not fight with your brand colours. But it also has less contrast than white or black, which means the print colour has to do more of the work.
On light grey
Black, navy, bottle green, burgundy and strong orange all look sharp on light grey.
Yellow and pale pink usually look weak on light grey, because the bag and the ink are too close in brightness.
A white print on light grey gives a quiet tone-on-tone look, which some brands love on purpose.
If that is the look you want, our post on tone-on-tone tote bags shows how it works.
On graphite and charcoal
White is the safest print colour on graphite and charcoal.
Light grey, pale yellow and light blue also work well. Dark colours like navy, burgundy or dark green almost disappear on a dark grey bag.
When a white underbase is needed
On a grey bag, a coloured print sometimes needs a white layer printed underneath first.
This white "underbase" keeps the colour bright, because otherwise the grey fabric shows through the ink and makes it look dull. In screen printing, it counts as an extra screen, so a two-colour logo can become a three-colour print.
Whether your design needs it depends on the colours and the bag, so we check it on your artwork and tell you before production.

What a real grey order looked like this week
A grey order that went into production this week shows how this works in practice.
A company in northern Italy ordered 250 light grey cotton bags with a two-colour logo in blue and orange, to be delivered to their office by 2 November. Their designer sent the colours as CMYK codes, and our print partner matched them to Pantone ink colours.
Because blue and orange sit on a grey background, the print partner added a white underbase under the two colours.
So the print was set up as three screens: blue, orange and the white base. That is exactly the kind of detail we sort out on the proof, so the bags look the way the designer imagined.
The lesson for you is simple: if your logo has colours and you want them bright on grey, expect us to talk about the underbase.

Does the fabric weight change how grey looks?
Yes, the same grey looks different on a thin bag and a thick one.
On a light 140 g/m² cotton bag, the weave is open, so light grey looks a little lighter and softer. On a heavy 340 g/m² canvas, the fabric is dense, so graphite looks deeper and almost velvety.
The weight also changes how the bag feels in the hand.
A 140 g/m² bag is light and easy to fold into a handbag, while a 340 g/m² bag stands up a little on its own and feels like something you keep for years. Our guide on cotton bag weights compares the weights side by side.
For a gift or a premium shop bag, I would pick the heavyweight graphite or the charcoal twill.
For a conference or a big giveaway, the classic 140 g/m² bags give you the grey look at a much lower price.
Thick GOTS certified organic cotton canvas, 38 × 42 cm, long handles.
Fairtrade and GOTS organic cotton twill with a soft diagonal weave, minimum 50 pcs.
What do grey tote bags with print cost?
A grey tote bag costs the same as the other colours of the same model.
On our classic 140 g/m² tote, light grey, pure grey and graphite all have the same price list. Here is what you pay with a one-colour print, excluding VAT, with delivery in the EU included.
(Prices may change; check the product page for precise pricing that matches your project)
| Quantity | Price per bag | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 25 pcs | €8.67 | €216.75 |
| 50 pcs | €5.47 | €273.50 |
| 100 pcs | €3.87 | €387.00 |
| 200 pcs | €3.09 | €618.00 |
| 250 pcs | €2.92 | €730.00 |
The jump from 25 to 50 pieces is big.
For €56.75 more than 25 bags, you get twice as many. If you will use the bags over a few events, 50 or 100 pieces is often the smarter buy.
A two-colour print on the classic tote costs €4.52 per bag at 100 pieces, instead of €3.87 for one colour.
If you only need 25 light grey bags, the light grey logo-print tote starts a little lower, at €8.04 per bag, or €201.00 total.
At 100 pieces it costs €3.17 per bag, €317.00 in total. The guide to what sets the price of printed tote bags explains the other things that change your price.
How do grey bags look in photos and in daily use?
Grey is one of the easiest bag colours to photograph.
It does not glare in bright light like white, and it does not turn into a black hole in dark photos like black can. Product shots, event photos, and social media posts all look calm and even.
In daily use, graphite and charcoal hide coffee drops and dust very well.
Light grey stays clean-looking for longer than natural cotton or white.
Grey also works in every season.
It looks fresh in spring with a bright logo, and in autumn and winter it sits nicely with coats and scarves. That makes it a safe choice if you are ordering once for the whole year.
Who picks grey tote bags?
Grey is popular with businesses that want to look modern and quiet.
- Tech and software companies: graphite with a white logo looks clean at conferences and in welcome kits.
- Architects and interior studios: light grey and pure grey match concrete, wood and stone, and feel designed rather than promotional.
- Shops and concept stores: a grey shop bag looks premium without the cost of a thick canvas.
- Conferences and trade fairs: grey goes with every sponsor logo, so it is a safe pick when many brands share one bag.
- Gyms and sports clubs: graphite hides marks, and our grey drawstring gymsacs come in light grey and graphite.
If your brand already uses a strong colour, grey is a calm stage for it.
If your brand is all about colour, a coloured bag may say more, and our guides on purple bags and burgundy bags can help you choose.
And if you are still choosing between grey and white, our post on white tote bags with print compares the whites.
