Can You Change Your Design After Ordering Custom Printed Bags?
Share
Short answer: yes, until you approve the proof.
On a real order for 50 gusseted cotton totes, a Copenhagen design studio saw the logo at real size on the digital proof and decided it needed a second print colour. Nothing had gone to production, so the extra colour was priced separately, a new proof was produced, and the delivery date held.
After written approval, the screens are made, and the same change becomes a reprint. That single moment is the whole answer.

What was ordered, and what changed?
- 50 pieces, one design
- Natural cotton, 220 g/m², 38 x 42 cm, side and bottom gussets
- Ordered as a one-colour print
- Changed to a two-colour print at proof stage
- Delivered to Denmark on the original timeline
The studio had not made a mistake. A logo that reads perfectly at screen size on a white background can look thin and undecided when it is laid out at 20 cm across on natural cotton, and the second colour was what gave it weight. That is precisely the kind of judgement the proof exists to allow.
When is it too late to change a custom printed bag order?
The order runs in a fixed sequence, and there is exactly one gate in it.
- You order online and pay.
- We check your artwork and raise any issues that will not print well.
- We send a digital proof showing the print at real size and position on the bag.
- You approve the proof in writing.
- Screens are made and the bags are printed.
- Production and delivery take roughly 15 working days.
Everything before step 4 is open.
Colours, placement, sizing, even the bag itself. Payment does not lock the design, which surprises people who are used to suppliers where it does. What locks the design is your approval, because that is the point at which physical screens get made, and real material gets printed.
After approval, a change is not an edit. It is a new print run, with the cost that implies. This is not a policy anyone invented to be difficult; it is simply what screen printing is.
38 x 42 cm, side and bottom gussets. The most ordered weight for brand and studio work.
What can you change before approving the proof?
| Change | Before proof approval | After approval |
|---|---|---|
| Print size or position | Free, new proof issued | Reprint |
| Ink colour | Free, new proof issued | Reprint |
| Adding a print colour | Charged separately, new proof | Reprint |
| Swapping the bag or colour | Possible, price adjusted | New order |
| Quantity | Possible, price adjusted | New order |
What does adding a second print colour cost?
An extra colour means an extra screen, so it carries a real cost.
We charge it as a separate, visible line rather than burying it in a vague revision fee, and the price for each print-colour option is shown on the product page before you order, alongside every quantity tier.
Worth knowing: the cost of a colour is largely fixed per run, so it hurts less per bag as quantity rises. On 25 pieces, a second colour is noticeable. On 250 it is marginal. If you are undecided between one and two colours, look at the two prices at your actual quantity rather than reasoning about it in the abstract.
Worth knowing the other way round: on natural undyed cotton, a restrained one-colour mark often looks better than a busy two-colour one.
More colours is not automatically better design.
How should you review a digital proof?
Most people spend two minutes on the proof and then spend the rest of the run wishing they had spent twenty.
Four things to check:
- Size in context. Look at the print relative to the bag, not on its own. A logo that felt bold in your brand guidelines can look timid across 38 cm of cotton.
- Position. Centred is not always right. Consider where a shoulder strap falls and where the bag creases when it is carried.
- Contrast on the actual fabric. Light ink on natural cotton behaves differently from the same ink on black. Print colour choice matters far more on dark fabric.
- Fine detail. Hairlines and small text are where screen printing struggles. If something looks marginal on the proof, ask before approving.
If anything feels unresolved, say so before you approve. A second proof costs nothing and a reprint costs a run.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my design after paying for custom printed bags?
Yes, up until you approve the digital proof in writing. Payment does not lock the design. Production begins only after approval, so colours, size and placement are all still open before that point.
What happens if I spot a mistake after approving the proof?
Once approved, the screens are made and the artwork is committed, so a change means a new print run rather than an edit. Contact us as soon as you notice and we will tell you honestly what is still possible.
Does changing the design delay delivery?
Not if it happens during the approval window, which is where this order changed. Lead time is counted from proof approval, so a change made before approval simply shifts when that clock starts. On this order the delivery date held.
How many print colours can I have?
Multiple colours are available and each option is priced on the product page. Each colour needs its own screen, so the cost rises per colour and falls per bag as quantity rises.
Can I get a physical sample before approving?
The standard process uses a digital proof rather than a printed sample, which is what keeps small runs affordable and lead times short. If you want to see the fabric and print quality in hand before a large order, the practical route is a 25-piece run first.
