What works in a museum or gallery shop — and why

Museum retail has one constraint that ordinary promotional buying does not: the bag has to survive comparison with everything else on the shelf. A visitor who has just walked through a curated exhibition applies the same eye at the till. Here is what that means in practice.

Start at 220 g/m² for anything with a price tag

Below 220 g/m² a cotton tote feels like something that was given away, because in most people's experience it was. At 220 g/m² and above the fabric has enough body to stand on a shelf without slumping, and a customer picking it up gets tactile confirmation that it is worth paying for. This is the single decision that most affects sell-through.

340 g/m² organic canvas for flagship merchandise

For the bag that carries a major exhibition or the permanent collection, heavyweight organic canvas at 340 g/m² has visible structure and a substantial hand-feel. It supports a higher retail price, which matters because the margin on one well-chosen bag beats the margin on three cheap ones — and it holds its shape through years of reuse, which is free advertising in the city your visitors live in.

Keep 140 g/m² for genuinely free handouts

Lightweight cotton still has a job here: school groups, education programmes, open days and sponsor giveaways, where cost per visitor decides and nobody is being asked to pay. Using it for shop stock is the common mistake — it undercuts the price you are asking for it.

Why screen printing suits exhibition artwork

Screen printing lays down flat, solid, opaque colour, which is exactly right for collection marks, wordmarks and graphic artwork. Each colour in the design needs its own screen, so cost scales with colour count rather than quantity — a two-colour design across 200 bags is far cheaper per unit than across 25. Photographic or gradient artwork is the one thing to raise with us before committing.

Print per exhibition, not per year

The 25-piece minimum exists so a run can follow a show rather than a budget cycle. A temporary exhibition, a season, or a touring programme can each carry their own bag without leaving you holding stock after the show closes. Designs that sell can then be reordered to the identical spec.

Work backwards from the opening date

Production runs roughly 10–15 working days after digital proof approval, plus delivery within the EU. Add time for internal or rights-holder sign-off on the proof — that step, not production, is what usually runs late on institutional orders.

How long does production take?

Usually around 10–15 business days after artwork approval, depending on quantity and product. Tight deadline? Contact us first.

More about these bags

Custom printed bags for museum shops and gallery shops

A bag with a price tag on it gets judged differently to a bag handed out free. Visitors pick it up, feel the fabric, look at the stitching and decide whether it is worth the money — in a shop where everything else on the shelf has been curated.

Artwork you did not draw yourself. Exhibition merchandise usually reproduces an artist's work, a collection mark or an institutional identity someone else owns. Upload the files and we send a digital proof before production — colours, placement and print size confirmed in writing, so the curator or rights holder signs off on what will actually print.

Payment terms, stated up front. Orders are paid in full before production starts, and you receive a proper VAT invoice for the order. Useful to know early if the purchase has to clear an institutional finance process.
